How Do You Tune a Cello?

The cello tuner above will help you get your cello in perfect tune! But how do you use it? Follow these steps to get your cello in tune.

  1. Beginning with the A string. Press “Play” next to A above to begin playing the tone.
  2. If you have fine tuners, start by turning them to try to match the pitch being played. If the sound your cello makes gets more dissimilar to the pitch, try turning the other way.
  3. If your cello is really out of tune (or you don’t have fine tuners), you may need to use the pegs to make large adjustments. To raise the pitch, tighten the string by rotating the peg up. Continue playing the string to see if the pitch gets closer. Don’t overtighten! Turning the pegs too tight can lead to the string breaking. Instead, rotate it a few milimeters at a time.
  4. Repeat for the remainder of the strings.
