Finger guides are great for beginning violin players who haven’t yet memorized note names or positions of notes on the violin. They tell beginners where notes are on the string (simiar to guitar frets) and proper violin finger placement since it takes years of practice to accurately place your fingers on the right notes without guidance. Below we’ve listed some of the best violin finger guides that we know of so that you or your student can quickly get up to speed.

Fretless Finger Guide
These Fretless Finger Guides by the company of the same name (Fretless Finger Guides) are great for beginner violinsts. They are our overall favorite finger guides since it’s extremely easy to put on and take off with no residue left behind. It goes on as one easy clear strip so you don’t have to guess where each note should be unlike with regular fingering tape.
Violin Finger Guide by FFG NOTE THE DIFFERENCE
This finger guide was actually created and patented by a violin teach so you know it will work for beginner violin students. It is one decal that you can apply to a violin that lists all first position notes in their natural position.Just peel and place. 30 seconds later you’ll have a new fingering guide.
Don’t Fret FF121 First Fret Beginners Fingering Decal
Similar to the Fretless Finger Guide above, this fingering decal goes on as one sheet so it is easy to apply. The color coded lines make it easy for students to remember where notes are. Very useful for beginnners.
3 Mini Color Violin Fingering Tape
Standard violin fingering tape has been the go-to for violin teachers for decades. It is functional and a cost-effective method for finger guides when you need to work with a large number of students, but it is a pain to put on and tends to leave sticky residue behind. If you get this, I highly recommend getting some Goo-Gone as well. You will also need to have sufficient knowledge of violin fingering in order to accurately place the tape so it is not something a student can do.
HOT SEAL Violin Finger Guide
The Hot Deal finger guide comes in mulitple sizes to fit 1/8
– 4/4 violin sizes. It includes notes in first, second, and third position so you can keep using as you become more experienced. It’s it waterproof, oil-proof, and wear resistant so it should stand up to many the trials of learning to play violin.
